Henry Mayo introduces new technology to help improve accuracy and recovery in total joint replacements
It’s no secret that precision is everything for surgeons in the operating room. So is having the right tools and latest technologies.
Henry Mayo is giving orthopedic surgeons another tool to enhance accuracy and improve outcomes for patients undergoing total knee replacement surgeries.
The Stryker OrthoMap Precision Knee Navigation Software provides interactive monitoring to enhance surgeons’ decision-making for alignment and orientation of instruments, trials and implants as well as balancing soft tissue. According to Stryker, computer-assisted surgery may lead to increased accuracy for implant alignment, decreased blood loss, better knee function and better quality of life.
“The Stryker system is the latest technology that’s available for total joint replacement,” said Pam Geyer, RN, Manager of Orthopedics, Spine Surgery and Pain Management at Henry Mayo, noting that most patients who had navigation-assisted knee replacement surgery in the morning went home the same day. “With increased precision, there’s an opportunity for faster recovery times.”
Last December, Stephen Dolan had his left knee replaced by Jamie Hernandez, MD, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacement and has performed several surgeries using the Stryker system. According to Dolan, a Valencia resident who retired after a 30-year career in law enforcement, his recovery from the software-aided surgery has been far different than when he had his right knee replaced at another hospital five years ago.
“I was walking around a lot faster than my previous surgery, which required a two-night hospital stay compared to one night at Henry Mayo,” Dolan said. “I feel like I’m several weeks ahead in my recovery; I was walking around the block with a walker within 10 days and switched to a cane by the third week.”
Dolan said he selected Dr. Hernandez to perform his recent surgery because of the surgeon’s experience with the navigation software. “I didn’t know a whole lot about it, but after researching the computer-mapping software and talking to my friends, who had the same surgery with Dr. Hernandez, I figured I’d get a better result.” IYH
